Debt Is a Prison You Pay Rent On

Introduction

The Prophet ﷺ would refuse to lead the funeral prayer of a Muslim who died in unpaid debt — until someone in the crowd stepped forward to cover it. He did not say this lightly. He was telling the ummah: debt is not a financial inconvenience. It is a shackle on your soul that follows you into the grave.

Historical Context

The Prophet ﷺ made du'a: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.' Someone asked why he mentioned debt so often. He replied: 'When a man gets into debt, he speaks and lies, promises and breaks.' The debt itself was not the sin — it was what debt did to a man's character.
