Introduction
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ descended from Mount Hira trembling, terrified, uncertain if he had lost his mind. He did not run to a scholar — there were none yet. He did not consult a friend. He ran home to his wife. Khadijah رضي الله عنها covered him, calmed him, and said the sentence that anchored the beginning of Islam itself. This file is about what marriage is for — when the world outside the door is on fire.
Historical Context
Khadijah's response: 'By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kin, you help the destitute, you serve your guests generously, and you assist those in need.' She did not comfort him with sentiment. She reminded him of his character. Then she took him to Waraqah for confirmation. She was fifteen years his senior, twice widowed, wealthy, established — and she chose to spend every ounce of that wealth and standing on his mission. The Prophet ﷺ said, decades after her death: 'She believed in me when everyone else disbelieved.'
Islamic Lessons
1. A spouse is a garment (2:187) — protection, intimacy, dignity. 2. Real love shows up in the moment of the other's trembling. 3. Support your spouse's mission — do not compete with it. 4. The Prophet ﷺ never remarried while Khadijah lived. Loyalty is a form of love.
Modern Application
Ask your spouse this week, unprompted: 'What are you carrying that I don't see?' Then listen without fixing. Marriage is not a partnership of equal transactions — it is a shared shelter against the storm outside. Rebuild the shelter, brick by brick.
Decision Framework
- 1.Prioritise the marriage above all other relationships except Allah's.
- 2.In your spouse's crisis, remind them of their character — not of your opinions.
- 3.Protect your spouse from your family's tongue.
- 4.Do not compete for status inside your marriage. Cooperate.
Action Checklist
- Ask 'what are you carrying?' — this week, without agenda.
- Write down 5 qualities you love in your spouse. Read it aloud to them.
- Perform one small act of secret sadaqah on your spouse's behalf.
Reflection Questions
- When my spouse was last trembling — did I run toward them or away?
- Am I my spouse's shelter, or another storm they must survive?
